 CELEBRATING THE LIGHT

Music by Micheal McLean
April 8, 9, 10, 1999
Citrus Heights Stake
Text Adaptation by Marsha Steed

Scene 1 “LIGHT”

The scene opens with the cast & chorus on stage and the lights go completely black. A voice is heard saying dark & repeating the quote. Then a small battery operated candle light turns on & the light quote is heard. Another light goes on (maybe a flashlight, something brighter than the candle) & the Corinthians quote is heard. The music starts & a head spot is on the first soloist. A second spot (larger than the first one) comes on for the second soloist. When the chorus starts the lights fade up.

Speaker 1:
Dark—Lacking or having very little light. gloomy, dismal Sullen or threatening. Difficult to understand; obscure.
Concealed or secret; mysterious. Lacking enlightenment, knowledge or culture. Exhibiting or stemming from evil characteristics or forces; sinister.

Speaker 2:
Light—The illumination derived from a source of light The particular quantity or Quality of such illumination. The pathway or route of such illumination to a Person. Spiritual awareness; A state of awareness or understanding, especially
as derived from a particular source.

Speaker 3:
Corinthians 4:6—For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath Shined in our hearts, to [give] the light of the knowledge of the glory Of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Celebrating the Light

I believe There’s a light
That shines in ev’ry one;
I believe it’s the light of the world.
I believe there’s a voice
That whispers there’s a choice;
and our joy will come
from choosing what is right
and always seeking His light
that shines in one and all,
and lifts us when we fall,
and answers when we call.

I believe there’s a light
That shines in ev’ry one’
I believe it’s the light of the world.
I believe there’s a voice
That whispers there’s a choice;
And our joy will come
From choosing what is right
And always seeking His light
That shines in one and all,
And lifts us when we fall
And answers when we call.

Celebrating the light
That shines in ev’ry one,
Celebrating the light of the world.
And we all can rejoice when our

Heart makes the choice
To reflect the joy
And keep it shining bright.
By celebrating the light.
And our joy will burn bright
When we follow His light.
Celebrating the light.

Scene 2 “Be That Friend”

Speaker 4:
Narrator: “Some of our brightest stars are falling to the darkness of exclusion.”

E—Speaker
D—Speaker
A—Speaker
B—Speaker
C—Speaker

E- (timid smile) “Hi, I’m Sarah, I was just baptized a few months ago. I was hoping you could tell me when the next activity was?”
D- (Starts to answer her, but gets interrupted, the circle slowly closes with her on the outside)
A-“Hey, are you going to the dance this weekend?”
B-“Of course, everyone is going to be there!”
C-“Yeah, but most importantly Matt will be there!”
D-“Can I help it if he’s wonderful?”
B-“Did you see that new guy? He’s so HOT!”
D-“Not as cute as Matt!”
C-“Yeah, but your biased!”
D-“And proud of it!” (laughter)
E-“Excuse me”.. Hey guys!” (youth standing on the outside of the circle hardly even gets a smile)
B-“Yeah sure, no problem” (closes the circle back up) “Anyway, I heard he doesn’t even have a girlfriend. Moved from Wyoming or someplace.”

Guy—Speaker

Guy-“Hey, you looking for something to do? There’s a ‘real’ party tonight. My parents will be gone. Come and join us.”
E-(looks at the first group and goes off with guy)

Speaker 5:
Narrator-“Don’t be the friend who will have to answer the question, “Where were you, when I was falling?’”

Be That Friend

Well, your friends know what’s right
And your friends know what’s wrong,
And your friends all know sometimes it’s hard to choose.
But the friend who helps you see
Where the choices will lead,
Is the kind of friend you never want to lose.
It’s that friend who leads with love
Doesn’t push, doesn’t shove,
Just reminds you of the truth you’ve always known.

Then does more than just talk,
Takes your hand and starts to walk
By your side along the road that leads back home.
And this friend seems to see
All the great things you’ll be
Even when some things you do would prove him wrong.
But he always believes that the real you he sees
Is a champion he’s simply cheering on.
And the love that you feel
From a friend that’s this real
Is a powerful as anything on earth.

For it lifts and it grows and it strengthens and it flows
It’s what allows a soul to feel just what they’re worth
So many lonely souls are calling
And our brightest starts would not be falling
If only they had a friend a real friend.
Ev’ry one hopes to find
One true friend who’s the kind
They can count on for forever and a day.
Be that friend, be that kind
That you’ve prayed you might find,
And you’ll always have a best friend come what may.
--Michael McLean

Scene 3 “Will He Really Answer Me?

Speaker 6:

You know I’ve been a member all of my life, but somehow, I always feel like I’m missing something when they ask the converts to stand. I am embarrassed, like they know something that I don’t. I want to know the Church is true like they seem to, but I’ve never felt that “feeling.” How do I know when the Lord answers me? Perhaps I’m not listening to the right
voice.

(Chelsea Wolfe’s) Conversion Story (Use one from your own Stake)

My parents divorced when I was young, and they both remarried about three or four years ago. They both just happened to marry LDS members. I never went to church. When I was thirteen, I decided I wanted to, so I started going
to a Christian church. It was okay, but I didn’t feel comfortable there. Then in December of 1997, I started going to church with my step-mom and stepsister. I felt so comfortable and like I belonged there. I understood all the teachings and then I decided I wanted to be baptized. I took the discussions and one of the missionaries (Elder B) had become a good
friend and I wanted him to baptize me. When I talked to my mom about it, she thought that I was rushing into the decision. She said no. Then in March, Elder B found out that he was leaving our ward in three weeks. I called my mom that day and asked again if I could be baptized. Again she said NO.

The next Sunday I realized I only had two more Sundays that Elder B would be in our area, so my step-mom, stepsister, and I knelt down and prayed that my mom would let me get baptized the following Sunday. Sure enough, she said YES. I was baptized the last Sunday of March and confirmed on Easter Sunday. Now I’m still very active and the church has
brought so much joy to my life.

“Will He Really Answer Me?”

It doesn’t seem to matter how I try;
These thoughts just keep returning to my mind.
Will He really answer me?
Will He see what my heart needs?
Will He have the time for me,
Who feels so unworthy?

Will He really hear my prayer?
Will He let me feel Him there
When he lets me know He cares enough to answer me?

He’s never broken His promise;
He’ll be there,
He hears each word and each heartfelt thought in prayer.
He is devoted to you,
He’ll help you know what is true;
That’s what He promised to do.

He promised he’d never leave us all alone,
He marked the path that will lead His children home.
Don’t be afraid of the task,
He’ll answer you if you ask;
That’s what He’s promised, that’s what He’s promised to do.
Yes He really answers me
And He knows what my heart needs
and He has the time for me.
And now I feel worthy,
Oh He really hears my prayers,
And He lets me feel Him there
When He lets me know
He cares enough to answer me.
He answered me. –Michael McLean

Scene 4 “Don’t You Know”

Speaker 7:
Beehive: For the first time in my life, I found a person who really cared about me enough to take the time to sit down and help me set goals and achieve them. She was my beehive advisor.

Speaker 8
I don’t know if my Sunday school teacher will ever realize the effect she had on my testimony. I know she cared about all of us just by the time and effort she put in to prepare such wonderful lessons.

Speaker 9
Scout: I wasn’t into scouting very much and I didn’t feel comfortable with the other guys, but my Scout Master faithfully called me every week and invited me to the activities and even offered to pick me up if I needed a ride. He made me feel important.

Speaker 10
“I couldn’t believe the feeling. When I came out of the bishop’s office, I was a new person. I liked myself again. I was so filled with the spirit, and so ready to do everything that I knew was best. Sure, I knew that I would still fail sometimes, and that some things would be difficult, but somehow I was different, sort of like that guy in the scriptures… Alma. I was a new me, I was truly born again. It isn’t something you can explain. I really believe I can do it!

Don’t You Know?

Don’t you know?
Can’t you see?
I’m not who I used to be?
Don’t you know?
Can’t you see
What your loved has made of me?

Of the broken pieces of my life
You could see
All I could be if I was whole
Then you so tenderly connected
All the fragments of my misdirected soul!

Don’t you know?
Can’t you see
I’m not what I used to be?
Don’t you know?
Can’t you see
What you love has made of me?
How can I ever return the love you gave
When it’s more than I
Have ever known before?

Oh, you know I’ll keep on trying
(forever)’cause that’s what forever’s for.
Can’t you see
What your love is making me?

Don’t you know? Can’t you see
How your love has set me free?
Don’t you know? (Don’t you know?)
Can’t you see? (Can’t you see?)
I’m not who I used to be?
Don’t you know? Can’t you see
What your love has made of me?

--Michael McLean

Scene 5 “Hold on the Light Will Come”

Speaker 11
Isaiah 5:10 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Speaker 12
D & C 121:7-8 …peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a moment; And then if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all they foes.

Speaker 13
I am 16 years old and life isn’t what I thought it would be. Some days I feel like I am being torn between my family, my friends and my teachings. It is easier to walk out the back door so that I don’t have an argument with my parents; then I find my best friend, the one I trust and value, is trying to get me to go against my teaching – ‘after all’ she will say, ‘don’
t you want to be popular?’
Personal temptations are so strong- cheating, popularity, parties and boys! And if that’s not enough, I deal with feelings of self doubt. So many times I try and try and I feel like no one cares or notices…I thought that if I followed the pattern laid out by our Heavenly Father, all persecution, temptation and doubt would be removed. I realized by facing these experiences, I am going through a time of testing. I can find comfort in the Savior’s words if I can only hold on.

“Hold on the Light Will Come”

The message of this moment is so clear;
And as certain as the rising of the sun,
If your world is filled with darkness for a while
Kneel much longer when the light has come.

It’s a lesson ev’ry one of us must learn;
That the answers never come without a fight.
And when it seems you’ve struggled far too long,
Just hold on, hold on’ there will be light.
Hold on, hold on, the light will come.
If you feel trapped inside a never-ending night.
If you’ve forgotten how it feels to feel the light,
If you’re half crazy thinking you’re the only one
Who’s afraid the light will never really come

Just hold on, hold on, the light will come.
The message of this moment is so clear
And as certain as the rising of the sun,
If your world is filled with darkness, doubt and fear,
Just hold on, hold on the light will come.

Speaker

(A couple of girls grumping around. A few trying to get them to do something they’re not wanting to. One in particular is depressed sitting off to the side.)

X-“Hey Sarah, come on over here, we are planning the next activity.”

J-“Nah, I don’t feel like it. Do whatever you want, it’ll be boring anyway.”

ZZ-“Remember last year when we cleaned up Sister Hogan’s yard? That was a blast!”

Q-“Yeah, Ann got her sleeve caught in the rake, we laughed so hard!”

U-(moving over to Sarah) “Come on Sarah, what’s the matter?”

J-“No one understands what I’m going through. You guys just think everything is so simple. Try living my life for just one day!”

K-“They just don’t understand anything, that stuff is so boring!!! Why can’ t we ever do anything fun like go to Great America or something? If we just had some money, then we could do all kinds of stuff.”

S-“Yeah, we could ,,,But NoOOooo…then we’d be stuck doing junk like making little crafty things to give away. What fun is that?”

R-“Have you ever tried it?”

S-“Well…no, it sounds stupid. I usually stay home and watch TV. My favorite show is on at seven.”

J-“Yeah, that’s really hard, you have it so bad. Joe broke up with me this afternoon. I can’t live without him.”

ZZ-“Ah Sarah, I’m sorry, I don’t know exactly how you feel, but we do care…what can we do?”

Q-“You know what you need? Some fun! Moping around won’t help, either of you. Come with me, you’ll see, we’ll have a great time!”

T-(Nerdy girl, big glasses, etc.) “You know, My teacher said, “I believe humor has health benefits and extraordinary healing power serving as an antidote to stress, fear, intimidation and anger. Research tells us children laugh 400 times a day and adults 15 times a day. People get too stressed out. We need to lighten up a bit.”

S-“Wha…?!” (pulling them to their feet)

X-“What you need is to give a part of yourself away, you’ll be amazed at what happens. It’s like magic!”

“Give a Little Bit of Yourself”

Give a little bit of yourself
Give a little bit of yourself to your sister
Give a little bit of yourself to your friend
Give a little bit of yourself to your brother
Cuz love is all that matters, in the End.

You’ve got to give a little bit of yourself
Love is the key that unlocks the door
Love is the answer we’re all searching for
Love is the way to find joy forever.

Scene 7 “The First Step Back is the Hardest”

Speaker FM1
Speaker FM2

FM-1 “I can’t believe I gave in. I promised myself I never would.”

FM-1 “What do you mean?”

FM-1 “Three years ago my friend was really into some dark stuff. I thought that if I only befriended her, that I could change her. I was so sure of myself.”

FM2-“What happened?”

FM1-“Well, as time went on, she began asking me to hang out with some of her friends and go places with them. At first I was so uncomfortably being there, but soon I began to see more things I liked. I mean, they guys were rally cute and they liked me.

FM2-“(laughing)”Wow, can I come next time?”

FM1-“You don’t understand! Pretty soon, instead of me teaching her of the truth and having her come to church with me, I wasn’t going at all. I was ‘doing’ the things that I had been trying to tell her were so wrong!”

FM2- “What are you going to do now?”

FM1-“I don’t know what to do. I feel like all my church friends think I am evil and won’t even speak to me. I just…can’t believe this has happened to me.”

Speaker 14

C-I want to change my life, I know the steps and what I must do.

Guy—“Funny how things come back to you. I remember my seminary teacher  going through the ‘steps’ to repentance. How arrogant I was. I hardly ever listened as it seemed so much more important to tell Steve about my latest date. Man I was in love with Carrie back then. I thought she was the greatest! It has been a long road  back, but now I am ready to change my life. I was reading in Alma 32:14 ‘and now, as I said unto you that because ye were compelled to be humble ye were blessed, do ye not suppose that they are more blessed who truly humble themselves because of the word?’ That really hit
me. I realized I didn’t know more than my parents, teachers and leaders. I went through some hard times. I know this is right and it feels good.”

The First Step Back’s the Hardest”

The first step back’s the hardest
It takes all that you’ve got
You wish you could be sure
This would resolve things
But you’re not,

The first step back’s the hardest
‘cause you don’t know where or when
The road that takes it’s toll
For your mistakes will ever end.

And you’ve suffered more in silence
Than anyone could know
So why relive it all again
For them to judge the show?

But there’s a place inside you
That only you have known
That whispers it’s the only way
And you won’t be alone

The first step back’s the hardest
But those who’ve done it say
Take it take it, take it and thank God
You’re on your way.

Take the step and thank the Lord
You’re fina’ly on His way

--Michael McLean

Scene 8 “Don’t Believe It”

Speaker 16

In this age of increased individualism and selfishness, opinions seems to  matter more than facts, attitudes guide personal choices and language is typified by “I don’t need anyone to tell me how to think or act.” There will be events in each of our lives that will test our courage and extend our faith. At the moment you make a choice between good and evil and if it
be good, Satan will declare war using his artillery which he has been collecting for a long time. When you dace this truth, the shadow of discouragement, sin and error will fall behind you. You must never give up! It’s never too late! There is no one with more power than you if you live righteously. Remember:

Speaker 17

D&C 27:15:18 gird up your loins, and take upon you my whole armor, that you ma be able to withstand the evil day…..having on the breastplate of righteousness…taking the shield of faith wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked, …and the sword of my Spirit which I will pour out upon you,…be faithful until I come,

Good vs. Evil
Young man told he cannot rise above his difficulties, his turn around and subsequent conviction. The chain from despair to realization to Hope. Overcoming doubt. Let song tell the tale.

YM3 – (pondering to himself) “If I don’t go with them, I’ll have no one, no friends at all.”

YM1- “Come on what are you some kind of religious freak or something?”

YM2 – “Yeah, your mommy tie you shoes for you too?”

YM1 – “Tell you what, we’ll make a pact between us, and it one gets busted, we’ll all go.”

YM3- “I don’t think…”

YM4 – “Of course you don’t think, that is what makes it so great!! You just dive in, like bungee jumping.”

YM1- “You going to tell me you are afraid? The other guys are coming along, what, you too good for us now?”

YM3 – “No, it isn’t that, it’s just …”

Music introduction starts very softly at the beginning of this next line.

YM5 – “Look, I know your brother. What do you think he would say about you right now eh? Sitting there stuttering and stammering. Clint was a real  man, he’d never even ban an eye at this.”

YM3 – “Clint…. Is in jail.”

“Don’t Believe It”

You’re so weak… We’re so strong
You won’t say a word even though you know
What’s goin’ on is wrong.
Cause we’re so big… You’re so small.
You won’t stand up for yourself
At all – afraid you’ll fall.

I don’t believe it.
I hear a voice from somewhere telln’ me
Don’t believe it! You are not alone.
Made my choice to raise my voice
And finally take a stand.

You’ll give up…or you’ll give in
Or you’ll sell out but you’’ never win
‘cause we’re so big, and you’re so small
you won’t stand up for yourself at all
afraid you’ll fall.

I don’t believe it.
I hear a voice from somewhere telln’ me
Don’t believe it! You are not alone.
Made my choice to raise my voice
And finally take a stand.

We don’t believe it.
We heard a voice from somewhere telln’ us
Don’t believe it!
We are not alone
We’ve made our choice to raise our voice
And finally take a stand.
--Michael McLean

Scene 9 “Stay with Me”

Speaker 18
(girl sitting and contemplating with an open book)
“Such a little thing they said. It’s not worth worrying about. ‘Oh, you’ll be fine, don’t worry’…”
“How can they say that? I know I shouldn’t dwell on the disappointment, or the grief. Friends say they understand, even that it will be ‘alright.’ How do they know? How will anything ever be alright again?” Please, if I’ve ever needed light, needed someone who understands, really understands me… hear me now!”

Speaker 19
Narr – “The Lord surely died for our sins, but not only for that. Upon that tree, in the garden, with hands clasped and great tears from his beloved eyes, he suffered our pains and our grief…he felt the agony of disappointments, or loss. He understands the deep despair of illness and of pain. Only when we offer him our burdens, all of them, will we truly be
free of them, and only then understand what he means when he said,”

Speaker 20
(Matt reference) “So take my yoke upon you, and learn of me. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

“Stay with Me”

Every story has an ending even when it can’t be told.
And every broken heart starts mending when it finds shelter from the cold.
I heard a window always opens,
When the doors have all been closed.
And though I know it’s true,
I need my light to see me through
And Lord, I need you
To Stay with Me
Just until my heart recovers.

Stay with Me
It’s a lonely thing to suffer
Tell me how the heartache I feel now,
Will go away, someday.

No one ever can be certain
What another day will bring
So, dim the lights and raise the curtain;
The cast is waiting in the wings.
Love goes on and on forever
Though down deep inside I know.

I’ll have him back again
I’ll still be lonely until then
Oh, Lord, I need you.
Maybe we just might find the answers
That will carry me.
Like an awkward dancer on a crowded floor,
I’ll learn to dance once more, some day
If you’ll just stay. –Michael McLean

Scene 10 “Share the Joy”

Narration:
5 Light Quotes on Light

“Share the Joy”

We all share the same sun,
And we share the same moon
And we share the air that w breathe

But we all share much more;
Ev’re soul at its core
Knows what ev’ry other person
Hopes and needs.

Ev’ry heart wants to grow,
Ev’ry mind needs to know,
Ev’ry voice wants the chance
To be heard.

Ev’ry person who lives
Shares the hope they can give.
Let us all share the joy,
Share the joy. –Michael McLean

Scene 11 “In the Wink of an Eye”

Speaker 20

(Missionary recently called.  Our Missionary actually had his call in his hand, and opened it onstage - poignant)

Mom & Dad, I know two years is a long time, but time will seem to go by quickly. Before you know it, I’ll be home again. When I decided to serve the Lord & go on a mission, I knew it would be hard for you both to understand because of the difference in our religious beliefs. I strongly feel that serving a mission is one of the most important events in my life.
I will be serving the Lord and He will always be blessing me, guiding me, and teaching me while I’m gone. I will miss you both very much, but I want you to know I love you both. Mom and Dad you will always be with me, in my heart. Dad, I will miss all of our talks about girls, scuba diving, and motorcycles; and Mom, I will miss you comforting voice telling me everything is going to be all right. Both of you have always been there when I needed you most. I know Christ lives and I want others to feel the joy that I have.

Slides of current missionaries & preppies—those in stake who are getting ready to leave.

“In the Wink of an Eye”

In the wink of an eye I’ll be home.
Just you wait it won’t take all that long.
And though I’m not very sure
What’s behind this new door,
I’ll cling to your love while I’m gone.

In the wink of an eye I’ll be home,
And I’ll show you the treasures I’ve found.
And I hope that you’ll see
That the changes in me
Are ones that will make you proud.

And as I’m leaving
I feel sure
I have gone through
Leaving home before.
In the wink of an eye I’ll be home.
And we’ll laugh and we’ll hold and we’ll cry.
For this veil of tears isn’t measured in years;
It’s all in the wink of an eye.
The wink of a heavenly eye. –Michael McLean

Scene 12 “Together Forever Someday”

Family—Siblings

“Together Forever Someday”

(Ours talked about a brother who had been in a wheelchair and passed on.  They shared their feelings of their time with him.)

“Together Forever Someday”

Well, it’s hard to say goodbye and let go,
And it’s hard to see it end,
When the mem’ries we’ve just made
May never happen again.

But it’s harder for time
To ever erase, the together times we’ve shared.
So when we’re apart remember
All the love we’ve shared together.
And for all that love, thank the Lord
Above who showed us the way
That we can be together forever someday.
We can be together forever someday.
We will be together forever someday.

Michael McLean

During the musical interlude—

“All of us, no matter how filled with joy, or sadness, or somewhere in between, know of someone you would like to be assured you will see again. Perhaps it’s the person sitting next to you. Perhaps it is someone who has already passed beyond this experience. Whoever it is; wherever they are, remember, with our Savior’s infinite love we can be….

Together forever someday
We can be together forever someday,
We will be together forever someday.

Scene 13 “See us Shine”

(Slides being shown of youth in service - These were taken during the previous month.)

Speaker 20
“The Savior said: ‘Ye are the light of the world… Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and, glorify your Father which is in Heaven.

Speaker 21
The Lord has given each of us an inner light, which we are told must shine forth. Perhaps the best way to share this light is to serve others. From simply sharing a smile or kind word to helping with an Eagle or Laurel project, service can show itself in many ways. Share with us a view of these, our youth, ‘your youth… doing what brings them and other joy…for truly as King Benjamin said, (Scripture)

Speaker 22
“When you are in the service of your fellow man, you are only in the service of your God.”

“See us Shine”

Someone shows some kindness,
Someone give their time,
Someone helps a neighbor,
See us Shine.

Someone lifts a brother,
As he falls behind,
Someone shares his burden,
See us Shine.

See us Shining everywhere,
Every color, every kind
At the dawning
Of a brighter day.
Hope will lead the way and see us shine.

Someone says “I’m sorry,”
Someone knows it’s time,
Time for some forgiveness
See us Shine.

See us shining everywhere,
Hopes is in our hearts and minds.
There reminding us
It’s no surprise.
Love is everywhere
Just see us shine.

Someone throws a line out,
Someone holds and climbs,
Someone’s there to catch them,
See us shine.

See us shining everywhere,
Every color, every kind.
At the dawning of a brighter age.
Hope will lead the way
And see us shine.

And it doesn’t matter where you are,
Some heart will be shining.
There’s a method in the gladness
To stop the madness,
See us shine.
--Michael McLean

Speaker 23

We are at the beginning of our life’s journey we now have choices to make that will shape the rest of our lives. Many times these choices are not easy – testing our willingness to follow the path the Savior has shown us – it is our choice to follow the light…to be in the service of our fellow man,  o be a friend, to be a role model for other youth, to share the gospel.
Through our experiences, we can develop the same attributes the Savior possesses…such as righteousness…holiness and lowliness or heart, meekness, longsuffering, faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity. The light will shine from within

Christ continually taught, “Behold, I am the light; I have set an example for you, do what I do…(John13:15)
