Other Programs By Marsha Steed

Be Ye Therefore Perfect

NARATOR:
Lorna scurried about like a squirrel readying for winter. There were gifts to be purchased, the
tree to cut down and trim, the annual Christmas party to plan and carry out, cards to get in
the mail, the choir program to write, the youth caroling activity to organize,Visiting and
Home Teaching goodie plates to create; the trip with her family to the homeless shelter, and of
course her pet project, putting on the community theatre production of 'A Christmas Carole',
which was into the final rehearsals.

So much to do, in only three weeks, whyever wasn't the season two months long instead?
How was she to get everything accomplished, that was on her list to create the perfect holiday?
She grumbled as she took out the last batch of cookies from the oven. As she burned her finger
on the pan, she cursed silently to herself.

LORNA:
'Perfect Christmas indeed. Whatever made me think that I could create the perfect holiday?'

NARATOR:
Brianna, her 9 year old, came running into the kitchen with William, just 11 in close pursuit.
She sighed deeply, as she anticipated yet another quarrel to mediate.

LORNA:
"Whatever is the matter now?"

BRIANNA:
"Willy said that I have to clean up all the ornament boxes, why do I have to"
Brianna whined.

WILLIAM:
"I did it last year, it's your turn, why do we have so many of those any way?"
The scowl on his face, worsening Lorna's mood.

LORNA:
"Can't you two just get along for ten minutes?"

NARATOR:
She sucked on the wounded finger, and scooted them both off, with the instruction to
both complete the task.

Looking at the tremendous mess that was once a kitchen, and glancing in the mirror,
she saw an angry, disheveled woman, who definitely was going to be late for
rehearsal.

LORNA:
"Is this what perfection is? Maybe it's just too hard, maybe I'm just not celestial material"

NARRATOR:
She sighed yet again, and sank into a nearby chair.

As she sat, watching her mess, the clock, the unfinished stack of cards, and the pile of
wrapping paper accessories, her eyes settled on the manger scene, now barely visible behind thy
playbook, and score for the musical. Something began at her toes, and moved through her, like
a knife through butter, warming her, yet separating something from her that previously felt
necessary.

SONG:
Remembering that Joyous Night

It was a time so long ago
and in a place so far away
Jesus descended to the earth
In a manger bed

He lay No royal welcome when He came
Only the humble knew His name
Few knew the goodness
He would bring.
Born to earth the infant king
Men through the ages tell the Christmas
story
Relive the gladness
Recall the glory
In every heart the love is overflowing
Remembering that joyous night

Come back once more to Bethlehem
come hear the story once again
There in that chosen distant land
feel the wonder they knew then
Think of the shepherds and the star
Hear hean'nly singing from afar
Think of the baby filled with light
Born to earth that holy night ==================================================================================
She saw the little scene come alive before her... the tiny lamb, the camel, donkey and cow.
The young shepherd boy, Sweet mother, Honorable father, and Precious Son.
The clock ticking seemed to dull, and to still, the echo moving further from her mind as the tiny
lamb came forth. It spoke with the peace of innocence...

LAMB:
"I am the representation, of the end. I am pure, without spot, I know it is my lot to
be sacrificed for the gratitude of these good people, to die vicariously for their gratitude to live
in me, but I do not grieve for my life, for to this end, was I born"

BABY

Baby lying'in a manger
slumberin' so sweetly
What you goin' to be?
Baby all the world is watchin'
All the world awaits to see

Baby sleepin' in a stable
underneath the heaven
What You goin' to say?
Baby did you bring the Good news?
Did you come to light our way?

Baby gazin at the cattle
lookin' t the shepherds
What you goin' to do?
Baby Will you be the Master?
Will You bring the Kingdom too? Oh Look! See the cattle asleep
see the shepherds beside see the wisemen
they bow unto You!
Are you the One who was meant to be
Master?
To bring in the kindom too?
Alleluia alleluia

Oh Baby Hope of all the people
What you come do here?
What you come to say?
Bably can You be the Savior
come to save the world one day
Baby lyin' in a manger
Will You save the world one day? =================================================================================
CAMEL:
Next, the Camel, lumbering across the table looked at her with huge eyes.
"I, am the water, to alleviate thirst, one must drink, but for me, the water is stored,
to be used in time of famine, of drought, reminding us, of the living water we must
find, and partake, that we shall never thirst"
=================================================================================
BORN:
For He was born born within a manger
Jesus my Savior and King
For He was born, born, born within a manger
Shout Hallelujah and sing
Did you see the shiny star that lit up the
sky?
'Twas a sign unto the world the wisemen
testify
Did you hear the angel choir signing peace on
earth?
It was telling shepherd boys about the holy
birth For he was born born born within a
manger born
Shout Hallelujah and sing
He was the baby the Messiah who will
sanctify:
'Tis the holy Son of God descended from
on high
Has this baby come to save to redeem all
men?
by His willing sacrifice we all will live
again
For he was born born born within a
manger born Shout Hallelujah and sing
COW & DONKEY:
Coming forward before her wondering eyes, Lorna watched as both cow and donkey
moved in unison to address her.

"We are very different, yet intricate to the story. I," said the cow, "give of what I
partake, that all might be fed. I am service." The donkey, less inclined to share,
looked into her eyes. "In all things, we must know humility, I the lowlyest of beasts
shall carry the master in victory. A simple star showed the way to his birth. No matter how
humble, each has their worth."
=================================================================================
A Single Star
Long long ago in old Judea
a single star shown bright above the rest
It shimmered forth in majesty and glory;
'Twas a sign the earth had just been blessed

A single star sent forth from heav'n
a single star to tell us of His birth
We heard Hosannas from a heav'nly choir
singing peace to men on earth
A single star led to the child;
a baby sleeping in a bed of straw
A single star a tiny child a night of awe ==================================================================================
SHEPHERD:
A small boy, just about William's size stepped forward.

"For the sheep to follow, they must know my voice. I call them from harm's way,
and lead them home. I'm not very big, but I know who I am, and with my Father's
help, I have watched him, and learned how to be a shepherd."
==================================================================================
Star of Bethlehem
The night was long we traveled far
at times I looked but could not see the star
Yet still it shone unveiling then
the way to Bethlehem
My heart held fear 'mid puzzled joy
for I was only a small shepherd boy
And on a hillside soft and green
I hear an angel sing
I saw the midnight sky aflame with radiant
angels bathed in light holy light
Bringing word that Christ was born
and beckoning to find him; go and find him
A sweeter face I ne'er will see
than of those loving eyes smiling up at me
I found a King; I found a friend that
night in Bethlehem.
But life goes on years beyond one brief
night of my youth
Time clouds my vision of truth
And tho' I stumble and fall
I can hear someone call
"Do not despair; your star is still there"
That Christmas night so long ago has filled
my life with light because I know that he live
now as he did then; A king in Bethlehem
Whose love never ends shine for me again
star of Bethlehem =================================================================================
JOSEPH:
"I, am Joseph. My part in this scene is important, as I teach, I pass down what
my father before me has made me. We each learn from one another, to be adopted
into the family of God. I am not His physical father, but I shall do all that is
possible to raise him and pass to him the righteous heritage through example"

I Was Not His Father.... He Was Mine:

NARRATOR:
Lorna looked around her house once more, somehow all the trimmings, wrappings,
programs and preparations lacked something. There was no joy in them, only duty and
the dreaded word... 'should'. As she mused, her eyes again were drawn to the tiny
figurines. The gentle mother stepped forward.

MARY:
"Many love me, for my role, but it was not easy. I feel so unworthy, and so
incapable of the great task before me. Where am I to gain strength against failure?
How am I to raise the Son of God? I teach humility, I know not how this great
work it to be accomplished, or if I am able to do it, but I do love the Lord, and
know, that with His help, I can do all things. I am trust.
=========================================================================
Adoration of Mary

In a stable bare knelt the Little mother fair
Alleluia alleluia
And a heart of trust led the
Mother to do what she must...
Alleluia alleluia
She came bearing the child the Heavenly
King
Alleluia alleluia
At the manger knelt
and with gratitude felt,
Alleluia alleluia
Let us turn our hearts to the Holy Child
Alleluia alleluia

We will sing the praise of the Babe so
mind
Alleluia alleluia
And we humbly pray to the Lord our God
today
Alleluia alleluia Alleluia!
==================================================================================
NARRATOR:

A gentle finger touched the tiny manger , looked into those loving eyes. . . This one, she didn't
have to wait for him to speak. She heard his words ....over and over again. . . " Be Ye therefore
perfect, even as I, or your father which is in heaven is perfect "
He, the greatest of all, didn't even seek to claim perfection, until after He had returned to His
father... was she so different? Perhaps, just perhaps... perfection wasn't found in doing... but in
being, in loving...

Love. The word personified Him. She could almost hear him as he tenderly place his hand on her
shoulder, and repeated...

"Love is patient; love is kind and envies no one. Love is never boastful, nor conceited, nor rude; never
selfish, not quick to take offense. There is nothing love cannot face; there is no limit to its faith, its
hope, and its endurance. In a word, there are three things that last forever; faith, hope, and love;
but the greatest of them all is love. "
==================================================================================
GIVE YOUR LOVE AWAY

A child was born in Bethlehem
with-in a cattle stall.
A child whose love was pure enough
to lift and save us all.
He gave His love away,
gave His life that we might live.
Filled our hearts and souls with perfect love,
His love is ours to give.

Give your love a-way,
There's someone needing you.
Give your love away
Reach out in all you do,
For you have His love,
It's sent from above
Give your love away. When Life's clock is ticking by
the minutes and the years..
Fill your world with happiness
and wipe away the tears
then give your love away;
Share a smile with with someone new.
Lend a hand to those
who need your love,
love will return to you.
==================================================================================
She looked once more at the makings of her 'perfect' Christmas, then, with renewed understanding, she
put away the cards, tossed the wrappings... pushed the playbook and score to the side, clearing the table
for the view, of what truly made Christmas already perfect, that first holy family... She called for
Brianna and William to come to her. then together, they settled in the large armchair, her two
precious children at her sides... with newfound excitement radiating from her once stressfilled features...
she began...
"I want to tell you a story... about... the perfect Christmas...
"There came a decree, from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed . . . "
