February 2004

The month of kisses and candy, paper hearts and secret desires.  Ought there be a month dedicated to Love?  I have heard so many people say, "But I treat those I love well all year.  It is foolish to have a commercialized day just for that."

To them, I say, yes. . . it is important surely to treat someone kindly all year.  However. . . when you look back at your life, what do you recall?  The everyday?  The regular?  Somewhat, of course.  If you are always treated with love and respect, you appreciate that and remember it, but the specific memories are not there.  Markers for our lives that we can look back on with fondness and with a keen awareness that those who profess to hold us dear, truly do, by their actions.

My children and I used to spend hours making home-made valentines.  I have oft called myself a traditionalist, or a purist. . . though by no means a minimalist.  They remember those times.  Every one of them and 3 out of the four are quite nearly adults.

I love the month.  I love the remembrances, I love the beauty of it, and I love the scmhulchy setting apart of a day just for much and allowing me to simply say. . . I love you.   Whether it is to someone I care for romantically, my mother, siblings, my children or my friends.

I think the day is glorious.
